Answer

MCPL buys very few textbooks for its collection, although we may have a few.

We can request books on interlibrary loan from other libraries, but generally this is not a good way to get a current textbook required for a course.  Often libraries don't buy them, and interlibrary loans take too long to arrive or have loan periods that are too brief for students to use ILL books for classwork.  If you are studying independently rather than taking a class, MCPL's Interlibrary Loan service might work for you.

Montgomery College libraries have a few textbooks, and they lend materials to county residents, but -- again -- this is not ideal for a semester-long class.

Often you can buy used textbooks from your school's bookstore or from various online booksellers.  You can also rent textbooks or e-textbooks through Chegg, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Direct Textbook, Google Play, and many others.

Finally, MCPL subscribes to the online service Testing and Education Resource Center, which has study materials for a variety of careers as well as for all kinds of standardized examinations.

    Live Chat

Using this service you may be chatting with MCPL librarians or librarians at other libraries. All librarians will assist you and, if needed, refer your question, to MCPL librarians.

For more than a decade, Montgomery County Public Libraries has offered a live, digital chat reference service. Developed by MCPL staff in 2002, with just a chat box on the main webpage, we quickly expanded to include chat reference options that could be accessed across the website and even in the catalog. This year the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative, of which MCPL is a member, began providing the same type of chat reference service to all its participating members. We are pleased to announce that, by joining forces with the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative - a network of librarians worldwide - MCPL will continue to support our community with the same quality chat reference service that we have offered for the last 11 years, but it will now be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look forward to continuing our reference chats!
