Answer

Most library materials can be renewed 3 times, as long as no one has placed a hold against the title.  The renewal period is 3 weeks.

Interlibrary loan items from Marina can be renewed 3 times as well, but a staff member must perform the renewal for you.  You can call Ask-a-Librarian at 240-777-0001 or ask at any branch.

There are a few categories of material that can never be renewed:

  • Express books. These current bestsellers are not eligible for renewal after the 3-week borrowing period.  They are identified by red B&T spine labels.
  • OCLC interlibrary loan items. OCLC ILL items are not eligible for renewal.
  • Items borrowed on an Educator Card.

  1. It would be very helpful if, when we check our account information on the website, it indicated if something we have checked out is not eligible for renewal and the reason (express book, item has a hold, etc). That way we are not surprised when trying to renew something and finding out we can't, and having to run to the library that day to return it.

  2. Nels, Thanks for your comment about showing on your account whether items are available for renewal or not. We'll send it up to the technical team. Meanwhile, please know that you can identify Express books, which are ineligible for renewal, by the red B&T label on their spines. Also, if you sign up for Email Notification about your account, you will be reminded three days early about due dates. If you try to go to your library account when you receive the email and find you are unable to renew an item, you have a few days to bring it back.

Live Chat

Using this service you may be chatting with MCPL librarians or librarians at other libraries. All librarians will assist you and, if needed, refer your question, to MCPL librarians.

For more than a decade, Montgomery County Public Libraries has offered a live, digital chat reference service. Developed by MCPL staff in 2002, with just a chat box on the main webpage, we quickly expanded to include chat reference options that could be accessed across the website and even in the catalog. This year the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative, of which MCPL is a member, began providing the same type of chat reference service to all its participating members. We are pleased to announce that, by joining forces with the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative - a network of librarians worldwide - MCPL will continue to support our community with the same quality chat reference service that we have offered for the last 11 years, but it will now be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look forward to continuing our reference chats!
