How do I set my browser to remember my library card number and/or PIN on the log-in page?

Your browser has settings that allow it to autocomplete forms and to remember passwords.  Remembering your card number or PIN is not a function of our catalog software.

For Internet Explorer, see setting IE to fill in website forms and passwords automatically.  This link is for IE 11.  If you have a different version of IE, use the drop-down on the right to change the instructions for the version that you have.  You may also want to try IE in compatibility view.

For Firefox, see Firefox autocomplete instructions.

For Chrome, see Google's autofill forms instructions.

For Safari on Mac, see Apple’s autofill instructions.

For Safari on Apple mobile devices, including iPad:

  1. Tap Settings on the home screen.
  2. Select Safari.
  3. Select AutoFill.
  4. Set "Names and Passwords" to On. After doing this, the next time you are asked to type in your library card, be sure to check the "remember me on this device."

Finally, plug-in toolbars, such as the Google Toolbar, have autofill features.  See Google Toolbar's autofill. Open-source browsers, such as Firefox, also have plug-ins to support autofill.

  1. Thank you! That response on autofill is interesting and helpful. I always wondered why things fill in and I am thankful for it (except when it wants to fill in the wrong thing).

Live Chat

Using this service you may be chatting with MCPL librarians or librarians at other libraries. All librarians will assist you and, if needed, refer your question, to MCPL librarians.

For more than a decade, Montgomery County Public Libraries has offered a live, digital chat reference service. Developed by MCPL staff in 2002, with just a chat box on the main webpage, we quickly expanded to include chat reference options that could be accessed across the website and even in the catalog. This year the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative, of which MCPL is a member, began providing the same type of chat reference service to all its participating members. We are pleased to announce that, by joining forces with the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative - a network of librarians worldwide - MCPL will continue to support our community with the same quality chat reference service that we have offered for the last 11 years, but it will now be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look forward to continuing our reference chats!
