Answer

If you believe you have returned items that still show on your library card account, you should speak with the Circulation Staff at the branch where you returned the item(s) in question. To find telephone numbers for your library, please visit our Branches and Hours page.

Please bear in mind that unusual circumstances, such as long weekends, inclement-weather closings, or short staffing, can delay our check-ins for a day or two.  Even when we experience such delays, items are always checked-in for the date on which they were returned to our circulation desks or to our bookdrops.

  1. Some times, as the staff check in a returned book they fail to do it properly and it does not register as a returned book on my account. A week later I have gone to the stacks, found the book and showed it to the librarian. Then it is cleared from my account.

  2. It's true that we make mistakes on occasion or that a scanned barcode failed to register properly. We try to rectify such errors. Thanks for understanding.

  3. What do I do about books that I did not check out? Over 5 kids books/DVDs are listed on my account, but I didn't check these out. I don't even have children. :-)

  4. If items show up on your account by mistake, please speak with the circulation staff at your library.

  5. I returned four items five days ago, and they still show up as being checked out. In general, this is a common problem - it has happened to me at least half a dozen times in the last year.

  6. What do we do if items we returned are still showing up as in our possession - and accruing fines. I've returned other books since I've returned these and they're no longer showing up as checked out. It's rather worrying.

  7. I returned all of the books five days ago and yet one of the returned book showed up in my account as if it is still checked out. I hope this is an error or due to the holiday closings in the past few days.

Live Chat

Using this service you may be chatting with MCPL librarians or librarians at other libraries. All librarians will assist you and, if needed, refer your question, to MCPL librarians.

For more than a decade, Montgomery County Public Libraries has offered a live, digital chat reference service. Developed by MCPL staff in 2002, with just a chat box on the main webpage, we quickly expanded to include chat reference options that could be accessed across the website and even in the catalog. This year the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative, of which MCPL is a member, began providing the same type of chat reference service to all its participating members. We are pleased to announce that, by joining forces with the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative - a network of librarians worldwide - MCPL will continue to support our community with the same quality chat reference service that we have offered for the last 11 years, but it will now be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look forward to continuing our reference chats!
