What do the red B&T spine labels mean? What's an Express book?

Answer

The books with the red B&T labels are new or otherwise high-demand titles.  These "express" books can be checked out for 3 weeks, but they cannot be renewed.  They are shelved near the New Book displays at your library.

Express copies of a title do not fill hold requests.  Thus, they are quickly getting into the hands of readers rather than being sorted and trucked around the county for holds or sitting on our hold shelves awaiting pick-up.

MCPL also has other copies of these high-demand titles that do fill holds.  If you do a search in our catalog, you will see a bibliographic record for the holdable copies, and you can place a hold there.  At this time, we are not putting bibliographical records in the catalog that display the status of the Express copies.

In case you're curious, B&T stands for Baker and Taylor, a large book wholesaler and library supplier.

    Live Chat

Using this service you may be chatting with MCPL librarians or librarians at other libraries. All librarians will assist you and, if needed, refer your question, to MCPL librarians.

For more than a decade, Montgomery County Public Libraries has offered a live, digital chat reference service. Developed by MCPL staff in 2002, with just a chat box on the main webpage, we quickly expanded to include chat reference options that could be accessed across the website and even in the catalog. This year the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative, of which MCPL is a member, began providing the same type of chat reference service to all its participating members. We are pleased to announce that, by joining forces with the Maryland AskUsNow! cooperative - a network of librarians worldwide - MCPL will continue to support our community with the same quality chat reference service that we have offered for the last 11 years, but it will now be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look forward to continuing our reference chats!
